trying to update my iMac to Big Sur. When I open App Store and click download nothing happens.

What year is your iMac? If it is a 2014 or newer, use this link, and try again: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12. Backup before installing!
