To upload music to my shuffle, do I have to use Apple Music as the source?

I would still like to know what you mean by “music on a computer“. In other words, any music files that are stored on a computer hard drive can be loaded onto and played back on both the nano and the shuffle.

You need to use iTunes or Music on a computer, and tracks gotten through an Apple Music subscription can't be played on it.

I downloaded music, which wasn’t Apple related, from my computer to my iPod nano and it appears to work fine. Is the shuffle format different such that I can’t do the same thing?
Music refers to the bundled application in Catalina and Big Sur.
