What happens when I erase a phone from find my iPhone app?

My son forgot the passcode on his iPhone 7. If I erase the device from the find my iPhone app will that fix it?

iPhone 7, iOS 12

Ya that doesn’t work. Once you get past the recovery and try to restore the backup the computer just says preparing for hours. The recovery does nothing except make you restore through a backup. You get nowhere and waste a lot of time.

Then don’t restore the backup. Factory reset it. Don’t restore. See if that then works.
