My phone hasn't updated in 3 days. I have selected what to backup on iCloud before activating a new phone. The backup keeps saying it has failed. How can I specifically see what was saved in the back-up 3 days ago? I'm concerned I will loose old messages.

You cannot actually see what is in an iCloud backup (other than what you selected to include). See the 'Choose which apps to back up on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch' section in:
