Apple Car Play dropping out when attached via cable to 2020 Ford Ranger but works in BMW X3 via Bluetooth

Apple Car Play dropping out when attached via cable to 2020 Ford Ranger. On our other car, apple car play has no issue on a BMW 2019 X3. The main operating difference is that BMW connects via Bluetooth to apple car play but the Ranger connects via USB cable. The Ranger apple car play will simply drop out for no apparent reason whilst driving then reconnect again. Ford Australia are telling me this is an apple issue to check out. Can anyone help me please?

NOTE - phone software fully updated in both XS Max that we have between 2 of us. Have also tried multiple cables. Ford Australia tell me car software fully updated as well and that it may be an apple issue.

Thank you Warren

Hi warrenschrodter,

We see CarPlay is not working on your Ford Ranger, but it does work on your other vehicle.

Thanks for the clarification on the steps you've already taken. If everything is updated and you've tested with several different Lightning cables, let us know the following:

  • If you plug your iPhone into charge, does it intermittently disconnect?
  • The Ranger drops connection for both of your iPhones?
  • Are these the cables that came with either iPhone, or otherwise authentic cables?
  • If this vehicle has the capability for Bluetooth CarPlay, does it work then?

Finally, can you confirm if you've taken the steps outlined below?

Let us know, and we'll follow up from there.

Cheers!

Hey thank you for reply.....

  • If you plug your iPhone into charge, does it intermittently disconnect? - WHEN PLUGGED IN IT CHARGES. WHEN APPLY CAR PLAY DROPS OUT THE PHONE STOPS CHARGING AND SCREEN CHANGES BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FORD DISPLAY AND IF ON CALL IT STOPS COMING THROUGH SYSTEM SO YOU HAVE TO PICK UP HANDSET. IF NOT CONENCTED VIA CARPLAY AND PHONE SIMPLY CONENCTED TO CAR VIA BLUETOOTH THE CALL DOES NOT DROP OUT. IT DROPS OUT ONLY WHEN ATTACHED VIA CABLE TO CARPLAY.
  • The Ranger drops connection for both of your iPhones? - YES IT DOES IT FOR BOTH OF OUR MAIN PHONES WHICH BOTH ARE XS MAX. MY WIFE AND I HAVE SAME PHONE.
  • Are these the cables that came with either iPhone, or otherwise authentic cables? - ORIGINAL APPLE CABLES AND HAVE TRIED 3 DIFFERENT ONES. THE LASTEST ONE IN CAR IS A NEW CABLE.
  • If this vehicle has the capability for Bluetooth CarPlay, does it work then? NOT BLUETOOTH ON FORD SYNC 3 ONLY CONNECTABLE VIA USB CABLE. IN THE OTHER CAR IT CONNECTS VIA BLUETOOTH. AND WORKS FINE ALL THE TIME.

I am in the USA and had a Ford Explorer that did the same thing. But the radio I was using was an aftermarket Panasonic Radio that I replaced the original ford radio with. Never could figure out why it kept falling out and sometimes it wouldn't reconnect for quite a while. When I traded and got a Subaru, it works perfectly and never drops out. I think it depends on the make of the radio and not the maker of the vehicle.
