Hi Sarahjake,
Yes. It will not work.
You can use Apple's iWork apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. All your Microsoft Office documents can be opened and edited in these apps.
If you don't already have them:
Pages: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12
Numbers: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/numbers/id409203825?mt=12
Keynote: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keynote/id409183694?mt=12
You can also purchase the new Microsoft Office, or subscribe to Microsoft Office 365.
Or, you could look into the free, open-source, LibreOffice: https://www.libreoffice.org.
Cheers,
Jack

Open Numbers and use the File ➙ Open menu. When done you can save as an Excel file or as a Numbers file. The same goes for Pages and Keynote.
I've found another workaround with the free LibreOffice . It seems more compatible with MS Office filers than the Apple apps. Another free app is Softmaker FreeOffice. I just found it yesterday and haven't had time to test it out. I do know it opens the MS Office files but that's about it.
Office 2011 was a 32 bit application. It will not run at all on Catalina or Big Sur.
Microsoft stopped supporting it years ago. it's time to get current.
MS Office won't work on Big Sur. I have tried twice to get Apple support to help, but nope.
New versions will, but old versions won't, since they are 32-bit. And that's Microsoft's fault, NOT Apple's.

Jack
Thanks, Jack.
