how to capture streaming video with VLC
I would like to capture a streaming opera event because it's only being offered when I won't be available to watch all of it. Can I do this with VLC? Or is there another way?

I found a how-to at macmost.com called How To Record Your Mac Screen With Computer Audio. This is also posted on youtube. He uses iShowU Audio Capture, which is free, and Quicktime. He says it's for Mojave but I did it on El Capitan. My test was to record a live network news show.
I think if they want you to be able to do that then they will post a link. If they don't want you to do that then we'd be skirting the edge of the terms and conditions for use of this web site in terms of posting workarounds of copy protection.
It may be possible. It depends upon the site and their level of protection. Some don't slap on true protection, they just don't make it easy to capture. Others use true DRM protection and anybody posting about it here will likely find their post removed by the hosts.
Well said. I'm sure they don't want anyone to do it.
That being said, I do have musician friends who do a lot of streaming these days (venues are closed) who wouldn't mind at all. So, I will ask again, is there a way, via VLC or other application, that one can capture video streaming?
