Which router to buy for MacBook Pro/WPA3

Many wifi router questions. Looking for router I can configure from my Mac, (not app via iPhone)- to avoid setting a new online [Amazon] account, and avoid subscription for basic router operation. I need one OUT port to operate a few HUE lights, for home use. Prefer WPA3 because of "weak security" message/OS BigSur with my Apple AirPort Express WPA/WPA2. Any suggestions? Would be nice to get with it, initial phone product support to set it up. Any suggestions appreciated, I'm not finding any affordable routers that fit this.

Apple AirPort Express WPA/WPA2

Set the Airport to WPA2 only and the security warnings should stop. WPA is very old and now is not to be trusted. If you have used WPA to include some old items they will need to be pensioned off.

Asus has a number of good routers.. they just introduced AX68U which is certainly a cheapened model but the wireless will be far superior cf Express. If you plan to spend less than that you will be definitely compromising quality and useful lifespan. None of these are likely to last as long as your Apple routers.

IMHO spending the bit extra on the better model like AX86U is worth it.. but see what suits your budget.

Asus do not have phone support AFAIK. They are simple to setup as indeed most routers now have a setup wizard incorporated in the configuration.

TP-Link is another brand I use when I am after cheaper units.. their AX models like AX10, AX15 and AX20 are OK.. no where near as good as the Asus but manage to do what most people need with minimum of fuss.

See Dong's reviews.. smallnetbuilder is not so up to date as it used to be.

WPA3 is a wireless security standard. It is what allows you to have a secure connection to your wireless router ... regardless of which brand you use. Again, it is quite new. As LaPastenague has already mentioned, simply changing the wireless security level on your current wireless router to only allow WPA2 should resolve the error message you are seeing.

What you are paying for with security systems is usually parental controls and protection over router as well as better streaming controls and lots of extras.

WPA3 has nothing to do with that. Some router companies do sell add ons as an optional extra. Asus include it at no extra cost.. but some data is shared.. do read the fine print if you turn it on.

Eeros is a different sort of system.. it is mesh. You did not ask for mesh .. you asked what router to buy based on lowest possible cost. Mesh is more expensive because it includes multiple nodes to improve wireless connection around your house.

Sadly most use cloud configuration with a few exceptions.

See https://dongknows.com/web-interface-vs-mobile-app/

I fully agree.. I do not want to buy mesh systems with cloud-mobile app based setup. And I am not recommending them.

However all the cheap mesh systems are cloud based. You pay more when the nodes are built with internal setups or must buy a controller.

We will keep an eye out for your updates when they happen.

I'm not finding any affordable routers......

Not sure what "affordable" might mean to you. Can you give us a price range?

Would be nice to get with it, initial phone product support to set it up

It would, but that will be a tall order, and you may not be able to understand the heavy accents on the other end of the line.

Keep in mind that just about every router manufacturer now uses a web based interface for set up and settings adjustments, so you will likely be setting up a user name and password for just about any router that you choose.

I'm finding iPhone app-based, not web based. eeros6 wants user name, phone number, and email address. Subscription for encryption. (Don't want/need encryption from router just WPA3 whatever that is). Does this mean I should just accept the cable company's router? What if I cut off the cable and go with another company (then I'll have no router).

I need some time to check out all that and keeping this thread open hopefully will only take me about a week or two. Using my old AirPort Express until I can find a long-term router (like forever would be nice (wishful thinking I know). Just got the internet back online yesterday, so need to get some other things done and I'll be back to this thread., thank you
