external monitor goes green after waking from sleep mode

I just upgraded to a new M1 MacBook air and an LG 32" 4k external monitor connected via the USB C to HDMI/USB/USB C 3-1 port. When the MacBook goes to sleep and I wake it up the screen on the external monitor is green and purple (see pic), and the HDMI cable needs to be removed and replugged in to reset the colors. This problem does not happen with my 2012 MacBook pro, just with the new Air, so the screen and HDMI cable are fine. Must be a problem with the Air?
