Application will not open - Force quit shows .App

Recently my CEO has run into a weird issue with his MBP. He is on Big Sur and most of the time when he opens an attachment from Outlook (and sometimes when he opens an Office document from his drive) the application will bounce in the bottom but not open. He checks Force Quit and it shows the app is running, but the name shows ".app" after it. In the picture below, anything you see with ".app" is "open" but not showing. He has to force quit the app and try again.

We have tried reinstalling Office (happens in Acrobat as well). I found a diskutil resetUserPermissions command that we ran and that has not solved it.

Has anyone else run into this issue and found a fix?

Thank you in advance

You do not say what exact Mac

what exact macOS

what version of Office...

The general recommendation is verify your software is up to date.

Old files may need to go through an update upon opening if authored with an older software....

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur

Office for Mac running macOS Catalina

If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run, For Catalina Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.

Update the software : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac

Big Sur compatibility—Microsoft recently announced that it was officially ending support for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020. Apple Silicon compatibility in Office 2016 is questionable. Office 2019 no issues.

the App Store apps will require you to subscribe to Microsoft 365; Unless you buy from Microsoft:

Sorry:

MacBook Pro is mid 2019 13" model MacBookPro15,2

Office is 365 and up-to-date

Big Sur is up-to-date : 11.2.3

I understand that some files need to update from an older saved version, but if he Force Quits Word, perhaps, he can open the file the right after without issue. So it is either failing on the conversion and works the next time or something else is happening.
