what is a digital crown on my watch?
Digital Crown - the knob on the watch that spins.
this feature controls scrolling, increasing/decreasing volume, can be pressed to revert back to the previous screen/app the watch was on, can be held down to speak to Siri, etc.

Try this;
Press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for about , then release both buttons when you see the Apple logo.Wait a few seconds, then hold down just the side button for about 20 seconds or until the “erase all settings” prompt shows up on the screen, then click it, then click the green check button.

i forgot my password and have just tried 3 times to reset it according to apple instructions...press and hold side button until you see power off...press and hold digital crown until you see reset...constantly brings me back to the password screen...
any ideas? or do i need to call apple?
Password or passcode?
if Apple ID password you would not use the watch to reset it. You would go to Settings on your iPhone - Click on your name at the top - password & security - change password
if you forgot the passcode to the watch you would reference the directions/reply below and erase all content and settings of the watch from the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Make sure you know your password to your Apple ID, as this can trigger activation lock if you don’t.
The digital crown is the large button on the side of the watch that resembles an old watch winder.
