I have a 21.5-inch, Late 2013 i5 IMac, with 16gb RAM and a 1TB SSD. I'm running Mojave 10.14.6. It's running consederably smooth. Should I upgrade to Big Sur? How it will affect the performance?

Unless Big Sir or even Catalina has some feature you greatly desire, stick with Mojave. I wish I did.

If you are having a problem with Catalina that would indicate you either have hardware issues or some other software issues. I would recommend that you create a new thread with an EtreCheck report included and we can look for obvious problems. Catalina (and for that matter Big Sur) should have no negative impact on your system's performance.
