fitness+ not showing video playing only sound

The fitness + video will play perfectly fine during preview but as soon as I start workout screen goes black sound works fine and a message about hdmi connection shows up. If I pause workout from the watch the screen comes back to normal and works briefly when I hit resume workout it quickly goes black again and repeats hdmi message. The Apple TV works beautifully in any other app watch video, YouTube, prime etc. just the fitness + is causing problems.
