How can I get my laptop to stay "mute" until i "un-mute" it?

I am a Deaf person who can't hear. So I don't want my laptop making any noises while I type and work on my projects late at night. But I keep on feeling the vibration and learned it was un-muted. I find it annoying. I don't want to wake up my neighbors. Then I checked the page - "discussions.apple.com" - I am perplexed to see people having the same and opposite problems.

I noticed one instruction from APPLE staff about resetting NVRAM/PRAM. I am nervous about doing it myself because I have a lot of projects on my laptop and would hate to lose them.

Any advice?
