Update from Yosemite to Big Sur?

My daughter has a MacBook Air (13 inch, early 2015) with 1.6 GHz Intel Core 5, 4GB ram and running OS X Yosemite v. 10.10.5. She has never updated the OS and can now no longer run some important software she uses. Is it possible to update the OS and to which one? Is Big Sur too big a leap??

FWIW, a 2015 MacBook Air can run Big Sur. It may have to be upgraded to El Capitan first. That being said, 4GBs of RAM is minimal to run Big Sur or Catalina.

yes, your daughter's MBA can run big sur.

use this link in safari: How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

also, you need AT LEAST 44.5 GB of free space available for that macOS jump.

and i think you can upgrade directly from yosemite, but you may need to upgrade to OS X El Capitan 10.11 first. you can try that if it doesn't upgrade to big sur directly.
