Forced to AirPlay to Apple TV and stereo pair HomePods from some apps

I've got 2 HomePods connected as a stereo pair and set as default audio for my Apple TV 4K. While working I like to stream music from my iPhone to the speakers with the TV/Apple TV off. Whenever I open Facebook, the Apple TV app, or YouTube TV, I get a prompt saying that the content will automatically play on the Apple TV.

There is an option to 'Play on iPhone', but it is ignored when pressed. In Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff on my iPhone, I've got "Automatically AirPlay to TVs" set to "Never". This is apparently also being ignored.

Note that the Facebook app only recently started doing this, but it has always been the case with the Apple TV app and YouTube TV (and some other video streaming apps like Disney+). This is NOT the case with Netflix. With Netflix I can stream music from my iPhone to my stereo pair HomePods and play Netflix w/ audio on my iPhone w/out issue.

Any thoughts on this and why some apps work and others don't?

Hello chaddbm75,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with AirPlay with certain apps. The functionality would be up to the app developers. We recommend reaching out to the developers of the affected apps for further guidance. This article goes over how to reach out to them: How to contact an app developer

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

I am getting this as well and it’s driving me nuts, I do not allow to automatically take over / play airplay.

I got in touch with Apple about this as I look at this as security risk as the Facebook app in my case is going around the security settings of the device. The only thing Apple says, just like below is I have to get in touch with the maker of the app to ask them to fix this. However as this is clearly breaking the device security Apple should take this more seriously. So as it is, it’s impossible to listen to music over airplay and use the Facebook app at the same time as it will always take over and does not resume the music after.

And as Apple wanted me to get in touch with Facebook I told them how in the world I should do that as it’s required to have contact form for app developers but Facebook has no way to get in touch with them.

So catch 22.

If you haven’t already solved this, it is likely related to iOS. Here are the steps that should hopefully take care of the issue:

1) Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.

2) Tap on General.

3) Tap on AirPlay & Handoff.

4) Tap on Automatically AirPlay to TVs.

5) Select Never or Ask.

Odd… that does seem to have fixed it on mine. Although prior to adjusting the “AirPlay & Handoff” iOS settings, I had also turned off access to Bluetooth and Local Network in the Facebook settings within the Settings app. Maybe all of those things in conjunction fixed the issue?

This has been frustrating as ****. If I’m streaming music and browse Facebook at the same time, all of a sudden it will stop playing music and play the stupid video from Facebook via airplay. I’ve also checked the settings and I’ve also got airplay / handoff set to off. There is just no way of stopping it.
