Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input sources and turn on the checkbox "Show input menu in menu bar".

Then, from the input menu in the menubar, choose "Show Emoji and Symbols".

In the Emoji and Symbols pop up, look carefully in the upper right corner. Click on that tiny icon to expand the Emoji and Symbols dialog so it is useable. You have to do this to get access to the math symbols.

From here, you can search for the square root symbol, add it to your favourites, and finally, add it to your text: √
