Used the serial number on the box, says the device is not eligible. The site says you can buy AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchase, and this is day one. Am I going to have to return them on Amazon and repurchase with AppleCare+? Apple store is way too far away to buy it in person.

It’s shipped from and sold by Amazon.com, the listing that is 1# best selling in earbuds. I did some more googling when I got home and on my desktop and found a number you can call to get AppleCare. If it doesn’t work, well, I’ve got a couple weeks to return and repurchase with AppleCare alongside it this time.
It may be the seller is not an Apple Approved retailer (that wouldn't surprise me with an Amazon seller).
