I'm not sure what you mean. If you have Mp4 or .mov files you probably can just drag them into iMovie. Mp4 files must be Mp4/AAC format. If they are not that you will need to convert them. Most .mov files should work in iMovie, although .mov is a bucket that can contain different codecs, and sometimes those are not compatible with iMovie. In that case, you need to convert the files.

You can use the free download Handbrake to convert the files. You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie.

Rich,

Thanks for your assistance. Let me try to clear up what I should have said. I have a number of Legacybox conversion of family 8mm movies into numerous mp4 files. I was looking to split the mp4 files into clips in to basic categories like family, child #1 and child #2 and then create 3 individual time integrated movies.

I am using OS Mojave 10.14.6 with iMovie 10.1.14 and have "iMovie the missing manual" by David Pogue and Aaron Miller and not very far into understanding how to use the current iMovie. I used older versions of IMovie about 2 decades ago for international travel but it has changed...markedly or I have just forgotten...or gotten stupider.

My iMovie program accepts the .mp4 files and now my first stumbling block is where should I add each mp4 file to cut the movies into my planned categories and how do I erase earlier added mp4 files. Delete doesn't seem to work.
