2020 MacBookPro M1 Big Sur - GPS

I would like to use my brand new Mac as an aid to navigation on board my boat but can't seem to figure out how to get GPS to the mac. I first bought a usb gps - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008200LHW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it wouldn't work as I couldn't get drivers for current macs-or something like that. Now I have stepped up to a much more expensive Bluetooth GPS- https://www.dualgpssolutions.com/explore-by-product/xgps150a, but i cant seem to pair it for more than a few seconds and I suspect it won't work anyway. anyone got any help??

I am not trying to be a wise guy, I just want to understand:

1) Do you mean a Garmin product that would share its long/lat with the MacbookPro, so I can use the MBP and other software as an additional aid to navigation as I asked? Or

2) are you suggesting I simply purchase a garmin GPS/Chartplotter to use along with or instead of my three other chartplotters at my two helm stations to navigate?

Thanks,

I am suggesting using a dedicated system rather than using your Mac. I often navigate the San Juan Islands and the waters around Vancouver Island and I would not even think of using my Mac rather than a dedicated system.

I guess I'm one of those who would not use a Shop Smith but would rather use a dedicated lathe, etc. But there are many who use multi-function tools. The choice is yours.

Thanks Bob,

I just bought this boat and the helm in my pilothouse already has two Raymarine e120 12" chartplotters, with radar, autopilot, etc. (the flybridge as a third). While these were state of the art when installed by the prior owner ten years ago, I was hoping to add the more modern navigation of apps such as Navionics and Aquamaps on my mac (if you dont know these apps you should look into them) with a 27" screen at the helm. The navigation apps, cost just a few $$ or so a year and would quickly bring my helm up to date while I figure out if I want to replace the older chartplotters with Furuno, Simrad, B&G, Gramin, Raymarine....make sense? All I need is a GPS my Mac can talk to....and I can't seem to find one, thus the post.

Thanks for your time,

Russ

Apple may not have provided a expected profile in Bluetooth v5.0 on the M1 MacBook Pro that an external Bluetooth GPS device may need to pair. If you have followed the directions for pairing that Bluetooth GPS device and it still will not pair after a Mac reboot, then you are likely done with a connected Bluetooth GPS solution.
