Screen Mirror - just spinning

I'm using a lightening to HDMI converter, but for the record, this is what happens no matter what I'm trying to do when it comes to screen mirroring.

It just spins and spins forever. And YES, I have restarted it. Again and again.

The only time I have managed to make mirroring work with this Iphone is when I used a third party app. I don't see any reason to pay for a third party app when my phone SHOULD be able to do this.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Edit - I answered my own question as far as using the HDMI/lighting cable. However, it doesn't work with anything else and does just keep spinning. The cable itself shouldn't even need to use the mirroring option. Once plugged in, it should just mirror. So if it isn't doing that, it's bad wiring or one of the ports is old/worn and does not have a connection.
