MBP doesn't recognize 10TB external disk

Recently I bought a pair of Western Digital Elements 10 TB external drives, and formatted them as exFAT in order to share them back and forth between my two MacBook Pro's (2015 and 2018, both running macOS 10.15.7 Catalina) and some Windows 10 PCs.

The external drives work fine with the Windows systems. When I plug either of them into either of my MacBook Pro's, however, nothing happens -- I give them a few minutes, and a drive icon never appears on the desktop or in Finder. In addition, if I start Disk Utility there is no trace of them.

Is this a solvable problem? Are drives of this size supported by these MBP's and macOS version?

FrankO23,

Thank you for the additional information. The best way to help isolate this would be to take one of the drives and format it to exFAT using your Mac. This way it ensures the block size for the disk is allocated correctly. As it's the case that you are not seeing the disk in Disk Utility, you can try the steps directly from Western Digital in How to Partition and Format a WD Drive on Windows and macOS and How to Format a WD hard drive to exFAT or FAT32 File System.

Hello FrankO23,

It sounds like you have external hard drives formatted as exFAT but your MacBook Pro won't read the drives.

You can try to erase the external drives and reformat them to exFAT using your Mac by following Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac. Ensure you backup any data on your drives to your Windows computer before erasing. After erasing it, test it in both computers and if it works, transfer your data back.

Hope this information helps.

Have a good day.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The problem I'm having is that, when either of the 10 TB external drives are connected to either of my MacBook Pro's, they are not visible in Disk Utility (in which "Show All Devices" is checked). I know the drives work, because they are visible on Windows PCs.

Could this possibly be a limitation of macOS Catalina, because of the size of the drives?
