iPhone accidentally disabled

So iPhone got accidentally disabled from someone jokingly trying to guess password. In the past I know the only solution was restoring through iTunes and losing all data that was not backed up. Has Apple simplified this process especially when I know the password?

If you know the passcode you can try a recovery mode update first following https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203122 This doesn’t erase anything off the iPhone, but if I recovery mode update doesn’t get it out of being disabled then yes you will need to restore to factory settings.

Past toddlers and small children, I’d assume any effort to disable a device was very much deliberate and intentional.

Regardless, someone clobbered your data, as an iPhone cannot differentiate a “joke” from an actual attempt to breach your device.
