Unable to check for updates in Apple Watch app after failing to auto update

Apple Watch set to auto update, update avail and put on charge next to iPhone at night while both connected to wifi, but wouldn’t update. Attempting to install manual with no luck because screen doesn’t give the option and won’t change after turning off auto updates. Power cycle devices and now stuck with and error “unable to check for updates” with no way to install the update at all at this point
