Can static discharge or ESD cause any damage to my iPhone 12?

So I've never had this problem with a phone before. A couple of times while my phone was on a charger, I went to check it and when I touched it I got zapped pretty hard. Why is this happening and how can I prevent it? And more importantly, can it cause any damage to my phone or its battery?

Dry winter air and scuffing your feet across a carpet builds up static electricity.

It is harmless to your iPhone or charger.

Put a rubber mat on the floor to discharge the static in your body.
