Forgot my password - can't retrieve backup. What a stupid system. It should be my choice whether or not I want to use a password. I back up my computers without passwords no problem - Home use only.

You have the option to turn off the passcode on your iPhone if you wish. However, if you are referring to the password for your backup, then you will not be able to use it. You have the option to create backups without a password in iTunes. If you have a password on a backup, you had to have intentionally created it. It requires entering a password and then verifying the password, it is a 2-step process. Once you have forgotten it, the only option is to delete the backup.
