I have an older ipad with a home button. My daughter cannot remember her passcode. We have tried many. I have tried the apple instructions for accessing the ipad. Not working. I have a black screen with a lightning cable and an itunes logo in a circle. That is all. I do not know how to tell which device

You are going to have to restore the device, and you will need to put it into Recovery Mode.
