Calendar search on my iphone is not finding past events that I can find manually.
Searching the same, synced calendar on my macbook finds the events without difficulty.
The iphone seems to find events up to a year ago, after that, nothing.
I can see nearly 200 people have reported this problem going back to 2017 but can't see any solution.

That is because at this point, there is no solution. The iPhone calendar has never been able to search past 1 year. That has been a restriction with the calendar. You can provide feedback to Apple here, Feedback - iPhone - Apple
