Hi! The Time Machine says that it does hourly, daily and weekly backups. How does it work if I have to connect my external drive maybe on a monthly basis only? Thank you!

To add a bit to what gntlmnking has provided you, when your Time Machine (TM) backup drive is not connected, TM will make what are know as "local snapshots" directly to your notebook's internal drive. When the backup drive is reconnected, TM will use these snapshots to send a backup to that drive.

mine is setup the same way. It would only do the hourly and weekly if your Mac is on and the external drive is connected.
