Connecting Bluetooth mouse to iPad Air 1st gen iOS version 12.5.2

I have a iPad Air gen running iOS 12.5.2 and I can’t connect my Bluetooth mouse to it because my iPad cannot get anymore iOS updates so how do I connect a bout mouse? It pops up and actually says it’s connected but I can’t see the cursor on the screen?

There is no type of wireless mouse/trackpad support under any version of iOS 12.
