Others can consist of a whole variety of things from local

Time Machine snapshots and other cache files and other temp files.

In addition, the other category can contain anything in your home

folder that doesn't nicely pigeon hole into any of the other categories.

Generally speaking, any of the system generated stuff will be deleted when

space is needed, like Time Machine local snapshots which automatically delete

any that are older than 24 hours.

If you want to determine what some of the "other" may be in the

your home directory, you can use an app called Omni DiskSweeper.

It will scan your drive and generate a list by usage hierarchically.

Just view under your home directory and see what may be using up

space excessively. This app is free but if you want a pretty picture

of what is on your disk, the app called Daisy Disk is pretty nice.

Note that none of these can delete anything unless you specifically

tell them to.

And on a last note, that "other" measurement as well as the other categories

are not alway entirely accurate. I had on one machine where it totally missed

nearly 40 GB in my iTunes library and was stuffed into "other".

It means your drive is partitioned and that some other partition is taking space on your drive.

System Information/About This Mac won't show you all the parts of your disk. You need to use Disk Utility.app to look at the drive and see how it's partitioned. Note that it's normal for the drive to be partitioned, so you cannot blindly remove the partitions - you'll need to know what's there and what its for in order to determine next steps.

Of those areas you may have control over, one suggests to Empty Trash.
