OS upgrade for my old Macbook Air

I have macbook air 2012. I havent used this computer for long time so my current software is 10.9.5. I need to upgrade OS first to run other software, so can you please guide me how to upgrade my OS to upper version? Thank you

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and click on Catalina.
