If you are running El Capitan, you are probably using an operating system too old for the current Photoshop.

The current Photoshop only supports Catalina and later.

You'll need to get an older version through Creative Cloud that does support El Capitan.

According tohttps://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx

You can only run the 2018 or earlier versions of Photoshop on El Captain, Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave.

Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to verify your Mac OS version.

You can go through the Adobe Cloud portal to download older versions of Photoshop when you pick other versions.

Please note, without knowing more about your Mac, we can't tell you if you are ready to upgrade past El Capitan.

See my FAQ* to see if you can run a newer Mac OS. And make sure if need Photoshop 2020 for a certain feature that all your applications are 64 bit compatible and your data is backed up.

To clarify:

El Capitan is Mac OS X 10.11 to 10.11.6.

Sierra is Mac OS 10.12 to 10.12.6

High Sierra is Mac OS 10.13 to 10.13.6

Mojave is Mac OS 10.14 to 10.14.6

Catalina is Mac OS 10.15 to 10.15.7

Big Sur is Mac OS 11.0 to 11.2.3

Apple dropped the X moniker from newer operating systems.
