BEWARE!!! iPhone 4 DELETED EMAILS by itself

I got the new iphone 4 and everything has been working fine...until yesterday. I noticed that my emails in my inbox were missing, so decided to check the other folders and same problem. Now, ALL of my messages have vanished. None in the inbox, sent items or saved folders, etc. I contacted Yahoo to restore my email thinking it was something on their part and they responded that an IMAP client (iphone) has removed my emails and therefore cannot be restored. I did not physically delete these nor are they in the trash folder. My husband has the same problem, but just 1 email was deleted...so far. My sister has the opposite problem, where emails deleted have come back. Obviously there is a serious glitch in the iphone 4 and needs to be resolved!!! FYI, the 4.0.1 update does not fix this issue. I have deleted my email accounts and added them back, we'll see if this changes anything. It's SOOOO frustrating to lose important emails! Make sure to backup emails to an account that you do not check on the iphone!!!

My wife and I are having the same problems. Our iPhone 4 seems to delete emails from our charter.net email server once it retrieves them. We sync our phones on two different PCs and I use outloolk 2007 and she uses the most recent version of Thunderbird as well as outlook.

Almost constantly now when I try to send/receive from outlook on the PC it tells me that another device/program is accessing the email server and the server is unavailable. It seems the phone almost always has the server tied up.

Sometimes the phone sporadically retrieves emails, often I have to power-cycle the phone to get emails to come through. I was getting duplicates on the phone today and very sporadic and random emails make it to Outlook on the PC but the vast majority are deleted by the phone before they are ever retrieved by the PC.

My MS Exchange account for work is problem-free. I have contacted Charter and they do not see a problem on their end and I have scoured the settings in the phone and it seems there is nothing that can be done to fix this problem.

Go to you mail setting and the mail account, then hit account info , the advanced then there is a section deleted message. That means if you have it set to deleted message from the sever after one week, you can always say never delete from server and the will store a copy of you messages on the server in Til you delete them

There are no such settings in YAHOO.

You have to go into the advanced settings of your Yahoo account on your iPhone. Are you sure you have it set up as an IMAP account?

Settings > *Mail, Contacts, Calendars* > +Your Yahoo Account+ > *Account Info* > Advanced

Double-check that your settings for Yahoo match this....

on the iPhone there is a setting on your iphone go to you settings, then mail and select you yahoo mail account (if you have it setup on your iphone) then go to account info then advanced, then you will see a screen that says

Nailbox behavior - that asks you where were you want the drafts, sent, deleted mail to go to

my is set
Drafts - Drafts
Sent - sent
deleted mailboxes(messages) trash

Then underneath that there is a section call deleted messages
this is what my is set to

Remove - After one week

and the choices are Never, after one day, after one week, or after one month.

You is probally is to remove the message after on day that is why all of you email are getting deleted.

My first orginial iphone i added my yahoo account email and I have not had any problems with my email getting deleted, and now i have the iphone 4, and still have the same yahoo account, my yahoo emails are still there.

John P. know what I'm talking about since I have had a yahoo account for couple years, but if you just go to the browser to the mail that way that might be why you emails are gettting deleted that is my, just check the setting that John P. and told you do then you should be ok.

Thanks for all the input from everyone! I went to the apple genius bar yesterday so they could check it out. Sadly, there was no fix for the problem. He saw exactly what was going on with the email, asked other co-workers and could not come up with a reason. He wiped it out and suggested there was a glitch/bug with the firmware. However, after doing all that it is still not right today. I plan to take it back in at some point.

While I was in there, he did say that there have been issues with email and the iOS4! If everyone reports their problems to apple, maybe they will come out with a fix.

I also had this issue. I have iphone 4 and yahoo email. I noticed that I was getting my messages properly for few days and today I saw messages but then it disappeared and got message about loading messages and it will not show up.
Although Yayoo is pop account....I noticed that email serves was changed automatically to apple.imap.. something. I would get user id and password which I confirmed were correct.
I deleted account and reentered and it would still go back to appl.imap account
Deleted second time now it s working but I lost few emails from yahoo that I can not download on my pc.

There is definitely issue with iphone and/or Yahoo email combination

THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!!!

I just recently (Oct 2nd) got an iPhone for my bday and I had a problem with being able to sync apps through iTunes on my PCs. While I was trying to resolve this issue on a day-to-day basis (I'm kinda busy with school, life and other stuff), I had setup my iPhone 4 to access my two Yahoo! e-mail accts. So, in an effort to resolve my iTunes Sync apps issuem I decided to RESTORE my iPhone to the factory settings.

It worked!... My apps were then able to be sync'd but there was a bad side... ALL MY E-MAILS FROM MY YAHOO! ACCTS WERE DELETED!

I checked them on my PC, NOT THERE! What gives?! I'm so frustrated right now...

I do, however, notice that when I use my iPhone to access my Yahoo! e-mails there are 2 e-mails in one of my accts that were left unread. Those have remained IN my Yahoo! inbox and I can see them on my phone.

In addition, when I use my iPhone to access my Yahoo! e-mail accts it initially prompts saying "downloading 44messages..." but it is too quick to read the entire msg because then the prompt goes away and my inbox remains blank. Also... I'd like to know how all my inbox msgs were deleted but somehow all my sent msgs folders on those two Yahoo! accts are left intact and untouched.

Something needs to be done. I've contacted Yahoo! (Rogers) Mail but I fear I will receive the same information as some other did here... "Sorry, we can't recover them..."

If that's the case, Apple should have a way to recover my backup file somehow to retrieve all my e-mails that are surely saved on it.

Man, I'm so ticked offf.... 😟

I just talked to Apple and found out what the problem is (over the past 2 days I have had emails deleted from my private domain server multiple times after doing a 'check for messages' on my iPhone).

Apparently, the multitask function on the iPhone 4 can cause this problem (and other weird problems, too). You'll need to go here to find out how to clear out your multitasking apps. And then you need to do that periodically to avoid the problem with email...CRAZY!
