Has Adobe Flash Player been discontiued? I get messages that I should uninstall it. Is this true or some sort of scam?

Don't download anything that is said to be installed from the internet. Get official instructions here: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html.
If you did download something from one of those messages, run Malwarebytes for Mac (free): https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/.

Flash id dead. Adobe killed it. They announced the death of flash all the way back in 2017.
Remove it from your machine. There is no more flash content out there for it to play.
Since around January 1st I have received online messages that Adobe Flash Player has been discontinued and needs to be uninstalled from my IMac. is this true or some sort of scam
