Using an external SSD as my startup disk with my Mac mini I followed the instructions on "Use an external SSD as your startup disk with your iMac or Mac mini" - Quoting from the instructions: "After Migration, change your startup disk to set the external SSD as the default startup Disk. Open System Preferences, then choose Startup Disk. Select the external SSD, and click Restart." Well, after over 14 hours of trying everything together with my Apple tech, the external SSD never shows up in the Startup Disk panel. Only my internal HD. Any solutions and further instructions would be very welcome! Many thanks in advance (somewhere along the way, it says S.M.A.R.T. not supported)... Help! Incredibly slow transfer speed using exFAT Hello everyone, i'm on macOS Ventura 13.0.1 and my iMac 27" (2019) have thunderbolt two port up to 40Gb/s. I have bought an external USB SSD from Samsung (T7 Shield 2TB NVMe) that is recognised by macOS itself as a 10Gb/s device. I NEED it to be formatted in exFAT, cause i do have to access files from different OS (Windows and Android), so please don't advice to format it in APFS. Anyway, i'm seeing an incredibly slow transfer speed con this SSD, like 20 or more times slower than it should be (around 50MB/s or less instead of the "up to" 1GB/s attended). It's slower than a normal 5400rpm hard drive formatted in HFS+. This is why i'm here asking your help. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

If you format the SSD as APFS within Disk Utility this will be the fastest and most reliable drive format for use with Mac OS High Sierra and above.

If it needs to be read by a PC as well as Mac GUID partitioning and ExFat Filesystem.

If it will be needed to to be read my any Mac running a macOS earlier than 10.13.x,

GUID partitioning and macOS Extended Journaled.

Otherwise, if for Mac only and only current macOS or later, partition GUID and

APFS filesystem.
