Sharp Onscreen Font on external 23" Viewsonic Blurs

When I first turn on my MacBook, the onscreen display on my external 23" Viewsonic monitor is conveniently small, sharp and clear. Then, after a few minutes and without warning, the fonts and other graphics on screen become larger and a bit fuzzy. Every once in a while, it goes back to the "conveniently small, sharp and clear" mode. How can I keep it that way?

This is in addition to my question which so far has been unanswered. The screen also has almost an inch of black vertical stripe on both sides. Can someone help on why this is so? Thanks.

Do you have the display set to the maximum resolution (Preferences/Displays)? Are you using your MacBook in mirror mode?

It's yes to both questions. But even if the answer is no, why would the fonts and objects on the screen starts correctly? In fact, yesterday, it stayed on the small, sharp and clear fonts FOR HOURS. When I came back from taking a snack, the fonts and all objects were fuzzy again. Another thing I noticed, when these became fuzzy, there are 3-quarter-inch black vertical lines on both sides of the screen. Otherwise, the entire screen if filled. Thanks for the help.

Not sure about the changing part unless you're starting an application (perhaps a screensaver) that changes the resolution. It may be a hardware issue on the MacBook side or the viewsonic side as well. You can test this by hooking up the monitor to a different machine or hooking a different monitor to your MacBook.

When the change occurs, does it change the settings in Preferences/Displays? If so, can you change it back?

I haven't checked if there any changes in the preferences, but I'll check it the next time it happens. Right now (11:15 a.m. CST), it's fine. The entire 23" screen is full, no vertical stripes on the sides, and the fonts are comfortable small and very sharp. When the change happens, the black stripes about 3/4" appear on the sides.

I have another monitor and a laptop PC. I'll try that today. Thanks.

Update on my problem. I've replaced my 22" Viewsonic monitor with another unit but exactly the same brand and model. This new one won't even start with a full screen and sharp fonts and images. The fonts and images are larger and still blurry with an inch of black vertical stripes on BOTH sides. But I changed the resolution from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 because this was the ONLY resolution that would remove the black stripes and give me a full screen. All other resolutions WORK but the others would either have blacks stripes on the sides, top, bottom and/or show a stretched and unnatural-looking screen. But my basic problem remains: fuzzy and blurry fonts and images.
