Data migration not working when OS version of old device higher than new device

Hi Apple,

when I recently updated to a new Macbook I couldn't migrate my old Macbook before completely configuring and updating the brand new Macbook to the latest Macos version. Migration assistant couldn't find neither my backup nor my old Mac until I did the update. No error message given.

The same happened to a friend who wanted to migrate his iPhone. Again no migration possible before configuring and updating the boxed new iPhone.

Please make sure that your new devices automatically update to the latest OS version before starting the migration process or at least provide some guidance for these cases.

Thanks for posting in the MacBook Pro community forum....

If you have an issue please state clearly what that is (?)

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205749

If that opportunity has past, the second best way is use the Migration Assistant.
