Router recommendation please.

A couple of years ago our village (UK) was linked to Gigaclear fibre optic cable, we joined and the package included a Genexis DRG router. The network is fine but the router is barely ok and we need something that will give a better/more efficient wifi coverage to the bungalow. We have to use an extender to get a signal away from the router.

Gigaclear now supply the Linksys router to new installations so ...

1. is this a decent router that has a good output signal, in which case the easy option is to get Gigaclear to supply/fit one.

2. what other routers are efficient and have a good signal output ?

3. is replacing the router an easy job, ie a DIY ? The old telephone broadband was easy but I have never connected a router to a fibre cable. Is it best left to someone who knows what they are doing ?

The cable comes from the "pot" in the road underground and up to a box on the outside wall then a feed through to the Genexis router died to the inside wall.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers

Brian.

If you need an extender, then consider getting a Mesh network router. A Mesh system is designed for additional WiFi access points to automatically mesh with the base router. There are a good number to choose from.

  • eero (what I use)
  • Ubiquiti (more the pro-sumer; the kind a techie person wants to play with)
  • Netgear Orbi
  • TP-Link mesh
  • Asus mesh
  • Google Nest mesh

A google search for "Mesh Router" will find you information about them.

As I mentioned, I have eero. 3 units. I have coverage over my entire home, and to about 250' from my front door, I can still stream Netflixs. 251' feet and my Netflix stutters, so I'm on the very edge of service.

Other mesh systems will most likely give similar service.

You have asked an impossible question to answer. Linksys has several models of router. So asking if a Linksys router is good in your sutuation is a difficult question to answer. Any brand name router will likely work well if it is a newer model. If the router only offers old WiFi security it probably won't work.

Consumer level routers are basically plug and play with the exception you have to change the password and set up security and the SSID. Millions of people do it themselves since they are designed to be self installed. Follow the instructions that come with the router.
