If your older mac/macOs does not have Software Update in System Preferences, this is not an issue—

from the Apple menu in the upper left >About this Mac> Software update is available to you

You can always go to the >Apple Store to Keep your Mac up to date

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Pro model you have, click on High Sierra, Catalina, or Big Sur. It needs to be at least a mid-2010 one to be upgraded past El Capitan.

If your Mac is running macOS High Sierra or earlier, you can get macOS updates via the Mac App Store. Or, use the link provided by Niel.

system preferences do not give the option of system update.
