You were fooled by a phishing message.

That didn't come from Apple. It came from the thief who has your stolen device.

When you used the link to 'log in', you gave them the credentials for your iCloud account, allowing them to remove the activation lock.

You will never see that phone again.

Moiz Shujauddin: Thanks for posting about your (unfortunate) experience with the loss of your device.

This case is fairly common for lost or stolen devices, unfortunately. Phishing us. We ourselves are easier to hack than our devices. Text messages, and telephone calls, and variously callers even claiming to be the police have all been reported as tactics to try to get our Apple ID credentials, for instance. These groups automate the credentials-collecting websites, too.

SravanKra: As for the title of this thread, iPhone and iPad can be hacked, even on current versions. It’s rare, but it happens. Apple usually the releases a patch, as the exploits become known and vulnerabilities are remediated. But there are always new vulnerabilities discovered and variously exploited, or we wouldn’t be getting on-going patches from Apple. But in this case as with the majority of “hacked” or “virus” cases we see posted around here, we ourselves got hacked. Not our devices.

Moiz Shujauddin: If you think your Apple ID has been compromised - Apple Support — yours obviously has been compromised, which means all your other passwords are quite possibly exposed too, if you’re using iCloud Keychain.

iOS / iPadOS devices cannot be hacked or infected with Virus / Malware / Spyware if it is updated to the latest iOS/iPadOS unless you have intentionally downloaded spurious software or unauthorized apps directly from the internet and installed on your device or/and have Jail Broken.

It (Hacking) also depends on how careful are you in sharing sensitive and valuable information pertaining to your iPhone such as Passcode, Password etc with your friends and family members.

Be careful when sharing the device's sensitive and valuable information with friends and family members.

Thumb Rules:

  1. Enable  Guided Access before handing over an iPhone to kids
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jail Break
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device and payment methods
  5. Beware of Phishing
