The furthest that can go is El Capitan. 10.11.6.
That's a mid 2007 model. It is considered obsolete.

I've just been helping a friend get his 2011 27in iMac back into working order and it's now running just fine using El Capitan.
He, though, is worried about it not being safe to use on the Internet as he cannot install Big Sur. What words of comfort can I give to him?
