Why does it say device timed out?

When trying to connect my iPad to my MacBook screen it says device timed out

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're receiving an error that says 'The device timed out', when trying to use your iPad as a second display for your Mac via Sidecar. We can understand why you’d want to resolve this issue. 


We can see you're coming to us from this article: Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar. Did you confirm that your Mac and iPad meet all requirements to use Sidecar? If so, please make sure you are using the latest macOS and iPadOS: How to update the software on your Mac, and Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You'll also want to make sure both your Mac and iPad are signed in and using the same Apple ID in iCloud, and that they are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network.


If you meet all of the standards above but the issue remains, please try restarting your iPad Restart your iPad, and Mac Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac, then try using Sidecar again.
