Try signing out of iMessage, then signing back in.
Go to Messages > Messages (top left) > Preferences > iMessage > Sign Out.
Quit Messages. Relaunch, and sign back in.

Let's try to reinstall macOS: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support. Make sure you have a working backup first in case anything goes wrong.

Out of curiosity: Aside from the Mac, you are referring to iOS devices which run iOS - a completely different and simplified operating system with different behavior than the macOS running on a computer?
Do you use Storage Optimization? How much free space is on your Mac?
Sorry....In the Message app on the iMac photos sent to me don't open but only have a box to double click in if I want to see them.
All my other devices the photos open automatically.
Photos app fine...
when in Messages I went over to the left hand corner and clicked on "search" where several contact icons came up .
When I clicked on those the pics in that message came up but i could chose only one at a time and when i reopened Messages i was back to no pics. I'm not sure what "search"has to do with my problem.
Hi Pete Kroner,
Are you having trouble opening the Photos app or photos within the Photos app?
