Fall detection and seizures Apple Watch

Can the fall detection system send an alert if someone falls and then has a seizure or does it only work if they fall and remain still? My daughter has recently started having seizures and it would be so reassuring if it could alert me. Thanks.

Hi Petersfamily

We purchased the Apple Watch for my daughter and have got the Seizalarm app which is great. It detects seizures and sends an alert to me (or numerous other contacts)- and also sends the location in an SMS. Luckily since having it, my daughter hasn’t had any more tonic clonic seizures but I find it very reassuring when I have to leave her on her own (she is 16 and so needs her independence). It means she can have a bath etc which I would never allow otherwise.

it is quite sensitive to changes in heart rate but you can adapt the sensitivity. If it is a false alarm she can cancel the alert. It costs £15 a month for the app

subscription in the Uk but I believe it is worth every penny. Hope that helps!?

I have exactly the same question as Family 265 but note that no answer is available other than the standard "How it Works" explanation. What we want to know is whether the Apple watch would send an emergency notification under the following circumstances (relevant to a seizure):- fall takes place followed by a period of rapid movement followed by a further period of immobility.

Any information as to the efficacy of the Apple watch in these specific circumstances would be most helpful. Seizures are a very common medical occurrence - perhaps Apple should test their watch under these conditions, so this question can be answered definitively - please!

Hi Family265

Thank you so much for your response which is massively helpful and reassuring. We are in a very similar situation to you except it is our son and he is 38 years old, but has just had his first seizure. He is autistic and has some learning difficulties but lives independently and this will give us far greater confidence in the event that he suffers another seizure when he is on his own.

Thank you again and we send you all best wishes for the future.

The apple watch doesn't detect heart attacks and doesn't detect seizures, that isn't the purpose of fall detection and it tells you that in the how it works.
