my current version 10.13.6 is not allowing me to download Microsoft 365

To add to Leroy's excellent advice, Microsoft supports the latest OS and two previous versions, so that means Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave. Way down in this Microsoft document

If your MacBook Pro is 2012 or newer, your can upgrade the OS. If not, look to the free productivity suite LibreOffice:

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur



To activate a Microsoft Office 365 subscription you simply enter the email address you used when you extend the subscription with Microsoft.
