can I use the same cord to power supply to charge my ipad and iphone?

The iPad charger is a 10W charger (higher power) and so long as you use that one rather than the iPhone charger you should be OK as that's what I do.

You can use the same cable for both. The iPhone charger will charge both the iPhone and the iPad. The iPad charger won't charge the iPhone though.

You can use the iPhone charger to charge the iPad without any worries. It'll just take longer than the iPad charger.

Sorry to contradict you but that's not accurate. My iPad charger charges my iPhones and iPod Touch devices every day.

Both the chargers and the cables are entirely interchangeable and you can mix and match at will.

I'll go the other way, the iPad charger does not charge my iPhone 3G. You can connect it, and it will show to be charging, but when you disconnect the battery display is at the same point you started.

Not with my iPad. Granted, it takes longer to charge the iPad but it does work.

Yes, I confirmed that my older iPod charger is 5W and my new iPad charger is 10W.

You have it completely backwards. I went to the Apple Store and asked specifically.

Charging the iPhone 4 and 3Gs (not 3G) with the iPad charger is officially SUPPORTED.

Charging the iPad with any iPhone charger is officially NOT SUPPORTED.

You talked to Apple executives at an Apple Store? Which ones?

What would be the difference between using the iPhone wall charger for charging the iPad and using a MacBook? Same power output for each one.

I will reiterate, while the iPad charger appears to be working it does not actually charge my iPhone 3G.

No they're not. iPhone charger is 0.5A. High power USB port is 1.0A.\

Try READING again. I said iPhone 4/3Gs and specifically NOT the 3G.

iPhone 4/3Gs charger:
5W = 0.5A * 10V
iPhone charger officially supports iPhone only. Unofficially, if plugged into an iPad, will power the iPad but not charge it (unless the iPad is sleeping)

iPad charger:
10W = 1.0A * 10V
Will charge an iPad. Will charge an iPhone 4 and 3Gs twice as fast as normal. Apple supports using this charger for the iPad, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3Gs.

USB-IF 2.0 Standard port:
5W = 0.5A * 10V
Officially, charging an iPad this way is not supported. Will charge iPhone 4/3Gs/3G at same rate as the iPhone chargers, and is officially supported for those only.

Apple non-standard USB port on newer Macs/Macbooks:
10W = 1.0A * 10V
Will charge an iPad at same rate as iPad charger. Will fall back to 0.5A for iPhone 4/3Gs. This is officially supported by Apple.

Whoops... correction, sorry... standard USB-IF 2.0 is
2.5W=0.5A * 5V so I would assume iPhones charge slower when plugged into these ports.

And, as you already pointed out, may not charge at all if the iPad is not asleep.

Yes although the Apple Genius said with it plugged into a standard USB port you won't lose any power either... rate of charge and drain will be equal.
