Want to Move Local iCloud Backup: from System Drive to Another HD

I’d like to move the local backup of iCloud from my system drive to another hard drive. It’s taking up far too much space.

  • I noticed there’s a Backup folder at user/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup. Are these my iOS device backups? I do not want to lose those.

But what about user/Library/Mobile Documents? Is it possible to move it to another hard drive with symlinks or something similar?

I do not fear terminal commands. Anyone who replies, I’m willing to try a lot over my Mac pay grade, so to speak. Thank you in advance!

Note is is not recommended that you relocate your iTunes backups.

That is a "hidden" local copy of your Cloud Derive and you should not alter it as well.

@LACAllen thank you for your reply.

I won’t touch the iOS backups, I need them.

Is there a way to set iCloud to store it’s local backup on another HD besides the system drive? I always try to maintain at least 15% free space on the 500GB system drive. Between Logic Pro & its libraries, applications, the iTunes library and the iCloud backup, its difficult.

Thanks in advance if you have a chance to respond.

iCloud backups are not stored locally. They are stored on iCloud.

The iCloud drive local files are not a backup.

Only iTunes backups have a local "copy".

Semantics aside, is there any possible way to get this copy (for lack of an appropriate term) of my iCloud files off of my system drive and store it elsewhere?

I understand & appreciate that you’re a high-level contributor and don’t want to recommend anything risky which might put my system at risk. I just want to know if there’s an Apple approved/recommended method for moving that directory. If not, I’ll check Google and carefully consider the risks of whatever I might find.

Thank you.
