Incorrect Apple ID used - how can I correct this?

In error used incorrect Apple ID on device - trying to change it to correct ID but saying this is no longer.

The correct ID doesn't exist or is inactive? Have you tried removing the incorrect ID, restarting, and then signing in with the desired ID?
