TV OS 14.4 Issue: 4K Video Output from Apple TV 4K to Epson 5050UB Projector

My system consists of an Apple TV 4K as a media playback device, connected to a Pioneer VSX-90 Amplifier. The amplifier outputs 4K through an OREI HDMI Extender (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087HWPNBD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) over CAT-7 to an Epson 5050UB projector (plays 4K x 2K; not TRUE 4K).

The system worked wonderfully up until a couple of months ago(/the release of TV OS 14.4?). The Apple TV settings showed that I was outputting 4K at 60 fps (without HDR; HDR required >18 GBPS) with 4:2:2 (may have been 4:4:4--I forget which) chroma subsampling. I updated to 14.4 TV OS, and that appears to have broken it. The Apple TV now only allows 4K video output to a true 4K monitor (either with or without the amplifier as an intermediate). If I have it plugged into the projector, it only outputs 1080p. Max it allows is 1440p

Recent update appears to have caused a compatibility issue with either the 5050UB projector (perhaps because of 4K x 2K issue?) OR with OREI HDMI extender (18 GBPS) over HDBaseT.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your response. Sorry I'm only seeing it now!

Yes; I've connected the Apple TV 4K to an LG CX 77" OLED TV (2020) in my bedroom. It outputs 4K 60 fps video as expected.

The issue is that after the latest update, the Apple TV only outputs a single 1080p or 1440p signal to my projector (through my amp and the Orei extender), because it has started recognizing that the projector is not true 4K (it's actually 2 x 2K). This is an issue because the projector is intended to take a full 4K 60 fps signal (and it splits it/overlaps the resulting 2x2K signals on its own).

I have two output screens plugged into the amplifier. One is the 2x 2K 60 fps projector (accepting a 4K 60 fps input signal), and the other is an actual 4K 60 fps reference monitor. When I unplug the projector, the Apple TV outputs in 4K again automatically. This suggests that the Apple TV automatically recognizes the projector's native resolution as 1080p (which is not correct)--but only since the last update.

Again, before the most recent update, my Apple TV showed that it was outputting 4K 60 fps on my projector screen (both screens plugged into the amp). I saw it with my own eyes. After the update, this changed and it's automatically set to 1080p. I have the option of setting it to 1440p, but this is worthless since no studio content is natively produced in that resolution.

I would like a way to force 4K 60 fps out to the projector.

Any advice? I tried taking the Apple TV 4K into the Apple Store for in-person assistance. I asked them to roll back the software or exchange it for an Apple TV 4K with the previous software version on it.

Nobody could help me with this issue. The Apple TV 4K I bought about 6 months ago has been made incompatible with my system through a seemingly innocuous update.

Thanks Chuck. I truly appreciate your feedback. It made me feel less alone with my issue.

That said, I want whoever falls upon this forum thread to be aware that I'm convinced my issue is a direct result of the most recent software update, and it will not be resolved because Apple has no interest in allocating resources to solving it (they would have to devote programmers, and it renders my 6 month old 4K 60 fps system obsolete--thus incentivizing an Apple TV 4K 120 fps and projector refresh).

I had previously half-switched to Android (in my bedroom) because of integrated Nvidia Gamestream, and it looks like I'll be fully switching now. My Nvidia Shield Pro will force 4K 60 fps output to my projector.

If Apple is ever wondering why Android TV continues to put up so much competition, this is why. I invested >$5k into a 4K 60 fps system that worked <3 months ago, and a single update to my Apple TV reverted it 1080p (or a single 2K stream). That's not convenient. I wish my Apple TV was still within the return window, since it's now useless to me.
